What happens if HPS system goes out of order when the car is in motion?

HPS is a system that provides additional comfort and safety when driving. Constructors have seen to it that while the HPS system fails, operation of the steering gear itself remains stable. Still it’s better to turn to an auto service station and to have the HPS system fixed rather than to drive a car with a faulty HPS system.

HPS system special features

Despite of a big number of components in the system, it is still reliable. Failures occur mostly because of system parts wear out or as a result of improper operation. To ensure the HPS smooth operation one should control the system fluid level. The lack of lubrication caused by low level of fluid can lead to early wear out of system components and parts. A pump drive belt also requires a regular inspection: insufficient or over-tension of the drive belt can deteriorate HPS system performance. Over-tension will excessively load the drive belt and will cause its damage in a certain moment of time, while insufficient load will cause slipping of the drive belt with its further premature wear out.

Symptoms of HPS system failure

Following are the symptoms, which allow to detect HPS system problems:

  • wheel jerking while turning;
  • bigger effort is required to turn the wheel;
  • noisy engine operation;
  • leak somewhere near the power steering;
  • vibration of the wheel.

Some of the above mentioned symptoms can signal the hydraulic power steering malfunction and excessive wear out of elements and parts of the system.

Equipment for HPS system diagnostics

It’s always better to turn to specialized service center for HPS system diagnostics. Special equipment should be used for HPS systems maintenance and repair.

MSG Equipment company offers equipment and tools for auto workshops professionally engaged in HPS systems diagnostics and repair.

MS505 Portable test bench for diagnostics of power steering racks can be used in premises with any working space due to its small dimensions. The equipment can diagnose hydraulic steering racks and steering gears.

It’s worth paying attention to MS402 Polishing bench for polishing shafts of steering racks. This operation is often required as a part of steering rack repair. MS610 tester helps to check performance of power system elements directly in a car, without their dismounting.
