The electric power steering consists of a mechanical part, a control unit and an electric motor. Problems with the control units are less common, as these components are protected from environmental hazards. However, faults can occur in both the mechanical part of the system and the control unit.

Let's look at the most common EPS faults:

  • Wear of the threads of the upper shaft, on which the steering wheel is fixed, becomes the cause of axial play and knocking of the steering wheel;
  • Wear of the upper shaft support bushing also causes backlash and knocking in the rudder;
  • If the upper shaft support bearing has rusted or is starting to deteriorate, it causes play, unpleasant sounds, grinding when cornering and driving on rough roads;
  • Wear of the unit housing bracket mounts will cause play of the housing and shaft, knocking;
  • If the cross members between the shafts are covered with rust, the steering wheel will start to wedge, there will be knocks and grinding when turning the steering wheel;
  • When the protective elements on the column are loosened, a squeak will be heard when driving;
  • The soot that has appeared on the copper elements of the drive will interfere with the work of the amplifier;
  • If the steering wheel sensor is out of order, then the power steering stops working;
  • When the settings of the control unit, it becomes the cause of errors in the amplifier.

What are the signs that you need urgent repair of the EPS?

The most obvious signs of EPS failure are: heavy steering, inability to turn the steering wheel normally when turning, noises when the engine is running, warning signals on the dashboard.

The EPS is repaired by specialised workshops. Before entrusting your car to a workshop technician, make sure the technician is qualified and that the workshop has modern equipment for diagnosing and repairing EPS.

Skills development courses for EPS repair specialists

In order to quickly and qualitatively repair the electronic control unit, the master must understand digital technology. One of the indicators of a master's high level of knowledge is the MSG Equipment training.

The MSG EQUipment training course

The company provides training on the course: «Diagnosis and repair of EPS units». This course will enable you to acquire and improve your EPS repair skills, as well as provide an understanding of the simplicity and ease of repairing this type of unit.

The course is designed to help you learn and improve your EPS repair skills.

After completion of the training, a diploma is issued to the specialists. Each learner can use the company's technical support services during and after the training.
